THE SHOW TEAM
The American University Equestrian Team is a club team and a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). These intercollegiate competitions offer riders of all levels the opportunity to participate and compete in Open Equitation Flat/Fences, Intermediate Flat/Fences, Limit Flat/Fences, Novice (Advanced) Walk-Trot-Canter, Pre-Novice Walk-Trot-Canter and Walk-Trot. In addition, Alumni Flat/Fences is open to alumni that have ridden in IHSA shows as an undergraduate in the Novice level or above. There are four to six shows a semester where riders compete to qualify for Regionals continuing onto Zones and then Nationals. It is desirable that you have proper breeches, dark blue or dark colored coat and a clean shirt. Protective Hunter/Jumper style helmets are required and black tall boots should be worn.

General Commitment
As a member of the AUEQ Show Team, you are required to make your weekly lesson, which will be arranged with your academic schedule in mind. Should you need to cancel, 24 hour's notice is needed to allow our coach and her staff to make the proper re-arrangements, since horses are assigned on a weekly basis. You may cancel a lesson three times and receive a make-up. After your three cancelations are used up, you will receive no more make-ups. Should 24-hour notice not be given, you will also not receive a make-up.
Showing members are required to commit to a weekly lesson program, at $684 a semester. This is due within the first couple weeks of class. Non-showing members may lesson as they please, at $57 a lesson. They may also pay the full package of $684. This will amount to a lower fee per lesson overall. However, the lesson schedule will be based off the show-team's needs. Additionally team members are required to pay team dues at $40 a semester, and a $45 membership fee to IHSA. Both showing and non-showing members are required to attend team meetings when scheduled by the President. AU hosts 1-2 home shows per semester, attendance by all members is required here unless significant advanced notice has been given. Fundraisers are held at least twice during the semester. All team members are asked to help cover these events, typically cupcake or donut sales in the dorm lobbies or a food booth at home shows. Participation in fundraisers will be considered when competition rosters are drawn up. Fundraisers will also help determine dues for the following semester. |
